the power of images

I'm not what one would consider a very political person. Visiting Israel this summer opened my eyes to a lot of the struggle for power, and how ugly that struggle can be played out.

The photos in this photo-essay (link posted by a fellow alumnus that was working with a Peace-making team in the middle east) reminds me of how powerful a photograph can be. Images sometimes have the power to evoke something from people that sometimes, even eloquently-written words just cannot.

I think in this series, the one that stands out the most to me is the picture of all the concrete blocks surrounding one little girl's pink backpack. It's interesting to me how a photo of objects can capture such human emotions. It seems to quite clearly represent the chaos and destruction that surrounds the children that grow up in these situations.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,"
Matthew 5:43 & 44

"Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you."
2 Corinthians 13:1

Halloween 2010 Shoot

This past weekend my sister and I tackled a ridiculously fun photoshoot project: a Halloween themed shoot. What a great excuse to play dress-up! Here are my faves. Once again, so much thanks to my sister who's always willing to play along with my crazy ideas, and makes a great creepy model as well! Haha... Oh! And the graveyard and tombstone is real! We found a great cemetary from the 1700s/1800s that worked perfectly for this! We had even more fun ideas in mind, but sadly my battery died. Oh well. There's always next time!

Boys

So I realized that all of my posts had been pictures of girls. I thought I'd mix it up a little and do a post with some pictures of a couple of great guys. These guys were gracious enough to let me use them for one of my photo class projects awhile back. Both shoots ended up being a lot of fun though. So I'd like to introduce you to a dear friend, Jeremiah (the one in blue and black), and my amazing boyfriend, Alan (the one in the suit). Oh, and I can't forget Cosmo! He is an adorable Boston terrier that belongs to a family that Alan babysits for. Not only is he adorable, but extremely well-behaved and does hilarious stuff as well. Meet the boys!

Color

As I take more and more pictures and learn more about my style, I've learned that I love working with color. I love black and white photographs, but I just have so much trouble parting with the color aspect of photography.

This was my first color assignment from my digital photography class I took. These photos are from awhile ago, but I had so much fun shooting them and love the way they turned out. I had some of my lovely friends from school help me play with my camera. Don't you just love Danielle's lipstick? It just pops! She definitely pulls it off well. And my roomies at the time, both Stephanies, were great models as well :)
